Streaming Movies Online

Streaming movies online just became something to look forward to for Australians. For a while now, we have envied our American counterparts because of such offerings as NetFlix and Amazon movies because, well as far as streaming movies goes, no body does it better. Thankfully, Quickflix in late 2011 launched their streaming movies service which has quickly grown to offer a compelling insight into what’s in store for Australians in the near future. To date Quickflix offers 400+ titles on their monthly streaming subscription which consists of new release and many old school classics, and they have also launched a pay per view option to rival the likes of iTunes and BigPond.

Still Early Days. Quickflix have attracted the likes of HBO who have invested $10 Million into Quickflix as a sign of confidence. This is great news for customers of Quickflix as HBO is a power house of film and TV series (Sopranos, Sex & The City, Entourage…) and they have expressed their intent to ensure Quickflix is well looked after, which makes sense given they are now heavily invested in the success of Quickflix.

As far as accessing their range of movies to stream, Quickflix is available to a large range of devices such as, internet connected Sony TV’s, Sony PS3, PC’s and Apple MACs. At the time of writing, Quickflix streaming service called WatchNow will be available to Apple iPad and iPhone devices as well as the Samsung range of tablets, TV’s and phones in the coming weeks. So from a member point of view, there will be very few devices in the near future that won’t be connected to Quickflix streaming.

Quickflix recommends a minimum of 1mb/s internet speed to watch their movies online, which in most cases is easily covered by a standard ADSL internet connection. The great thing about their online movies is that it’s a streaming service rather than a download movies service, the video/movie you are watching starts almost instantly and gradually loads while you are watching it. This is a far better option than iTunes or BigPond who require you to download the movie first before you start watching it, which in some cases can take hours.

How we enjoy our movies with Quickflix

We make full use of Quickflix, using both their mail delivery service and their streaming service. We’ve used Quickflix for over 4 years now and still our number 1 choice for watching movies is their mail delivery service, just because it’s what we are used to (call me an old timer!). We are slowly but surely using the movie streaming service more and more, in particular as the number of connected devices increases. We are particularly looking forward to the launch of their iPad and iPhone integration as we have apple TV and being able to stream it direct to the TV using AirPlay will be a huge plus. With the introduction of this, we’ll likely use their PPV service a bit more. One thing worth mentioning is also their vibrant community that exists on Quickflix, we have often read reviews from other members with similar tastes when determining whether to watch a movie or not. This is one feature that often goes unmentioned and is something we find very useful. For new comers to watching movies online or online dvd rental in general, I’d encourage you to take advantage of a 3 week trial to Quickflix as it’s a great way to ‘try before you buy’ so to speak. The 3 week trial gives you access to their ‘Full Service’ of mail delivery and watching movies online. Have fun!
